State Secretary for Security Policy visits the Multinational Force and Observers in Egypt
Bern, 03.06.2026 — Markus Mäder, State Secretary for Security Policy, will travel to Egypt from 3 to 4 June. The purpose of the official trip is to visit the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), an international organisation based in Sharm El-Sheikh. Switzerland has provided funding to the MFO since 1995, thereby contributing to stability in the Sinai and upholding of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.
The Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) is an independent international organisation. It was established in 1981 following the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty and monitors implementation of the treaty’s security provisions in the Sinai.
Switzerland has provided financial contributions to the MFO every year since 1995. In doing so, it supports the continuation of a mission that is valued by the parties concerned and recognised internationally. Given the security situation in the region, the MFO continues to play an important role in building trust and stability.
Discussions on regional security situation and role of MFO
During his visit, State Secretary Mäder will learn about the MFO’s mandate, working methods and current challenges. Discussions will address the security situation in the region, the importance of the MFO for stability in the border region and Switzerland’s role as a long-standing supporter of the mission.
